A Song for Palm Sunday - Psalm 24

I gave up years ago trying to get choral or congregational music published. It's pretty much impossible to get a publisher to look at your music. But here is a song that my congregations have enjoyed singing. We sing it throughout the year, but it makes a nice Palm Sunday song. I'm happy for you to use it. It would be nice if you would send me a note or leave a comment if you do. The first two pictures here are vocal parts with guitar chords. After that you'll find a copy of the song with piano that is several pages long. If you click on the pages they will enlarge. (or send me an e-mail and I'll send you a PDF file.)

The tempo should be around quarter note=140.

How Beautiful

On my blogs I have a widgett called feedjit that tells me how people come to my blogs. It's kind of interesting to see how people from all over the world end up on some of my blogs.

I was just looking at my worship blog Hilldale's Worship Blog and saw that someone had googled "rev lyndel littleton" and I was curious to see what came up, so I clicked on it. Mostly there were posts from my blogs. But there was one that looked like this - Bulletin 6-27-201 - ONEderful

So of course I had to click on it. It turns out that it was the Sunday bulletin for the traditional service at First Baptist Church, Augusta, GA. They were observing the Lord's Supper that morning and as they passed out the cups they played my arrangement of "How Beautiful" by Twila Paris.

A Nice Note

I received a really nice e-mail yesterday from a lady in Kansas. She told me how much my arrangement of "Brethren" - hymn tune "Holy Manna" - means to her. She said she told her bell choir a story that she pictures as she hears the song of worshippers coming to church and how exciting that time of worship is.

It's always nice to hear that something you have written has touched someone's heart.

If you play bells and have never played my arrangement of "Brethren, We Have Met to Worship" you really should get it. It is a ton of fun to play. Lots of key changes and marts and mallets and swings... keeps EVERYONE very, very busy.

Virginia Bells

A friend of mine, Rg Huff, is leading a handbell festival in Virginia next year. He was looking for a three octave piece without a lot of extra 4 and 5 octave notes. The group he will be leading will be a level 2 or 3 type group with many new ringers and he didn't want them distracted by all of the parethises that the extra octaves add.

He thought my arrangement of Immortal Invisible published by Beckenhorst would be just right.

It's kind of funny. I wrote it as a sort of up beat kind of song but the Koreans sing it slow and pretty. I like it both ways.

I don't think this piece is in print anymore. I ran across this recording because on my "feedjit" on my worship blog - www.hilldaleworship.blogspot.com - I noticed that someone in Japan had googled my name. Wierd! I don't know why anyone in Japan would do that. Unless perhaps Lyndel Littleton is a common name there. I don't think it is since the letter "L" isn't one of their favorite letters...

Anyway, when I clicked on the google link from feedjit I saw this link to the Georgetown College Handbell Ensemble playing an arrangement of mine. It was published by LifeWay several years ago.

Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing

Come, Thou fount of Every Blessing is a great hymn tune. In this arrangement, the bass bells play the accompaniment in 6/8, but when the melody comes in it is in 3/4. It makes for a cool feel to have the bass bells in one meter and the treble in another. I now don't remember if I directed it in 2 (6/8) or in 3. I know it changes later.

There are some interesting, quick key changes in this piece too. It's hard for me to write a piece and keep it in one key. You can hear the meters and the keys easier than I can describe them, so click on the link and listen.

Count Your Blessings

A really fun handbell piece of mine is Count Your Blessings. Here's the description of it found at http://www.handbellworld.com/

"Mix white, beach sand, turquoise water, palm trees, warm sun, a parrot or two and Lyndel Littleton's arrangement of this favorite gospel hymn for a taste of the Caribbean! Both the melody and accompaniment are syncopated with several techniques added to give the effect of steel drums and other island sounds. For further imagery add the optional instruments triangle, maracas, claves, bongos, string bass and guitar. Refreshing!"

The treble bells play a fun synchopated accompaniment and then the bass bells begin playing the melody. At one place there are three different themese going at the same time.

Practice the different parts separately and then put them together. A fun idea for m.74-89 is to have your bass players lay their bells out like a piano (with "black" keys moved up) and then let one ringer play all the bass bells as a solo - like on a big marimba. Then all ringers should step back into place on m.89. This piece is fun to play and fun to watch!

That is how I performed it the very first time it was played. I had written the piece for the handbell choir at Central Baptist Church in Martin. I was their director, but on this piece I played with them. When the choir stepped back and I played the "marimba" bells the crowd loved it!

Immortal Invisible

I love this old Welsh hymn tune.

The text has a very mysterious quality to it.

"Immortal, Invisible, God only wise.

In light inaccessible hid from our eyes.

Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days.

Almighty, victorious, Thy great name we praise."

So when I set this tune for handbells I began the piece with a rather mysterious sound with the lower bells played quietly with mallets. The tune is then played in a mode - not quite minor, not quite major, which adds to the mysterious sound. Later the tune is played in a bright major key before it returns the the modal quality of the beginning. It ends with exciting shakes of big chords to the phrase "Thy great Name we praise!"

This is my arrangement of "How Great Is Our God". Our handbell choir played it for the Middle Tennessee Baptist Handbell Festival. Since the camera is by the bass bells the balance isn't great. And we ran out of memory in the middle of the song just before the exciting key change. Still looking for a publisher ofr this one.

Brethren Keeps Ringing

I got an e-mail today from a lady who lives in Denver. I knew her from Martin. She wrote that she was playing bells at her new church and she had asked the director if they had ever played any of my pieces. The director - at that time - said she didn't remember ever playing anything with my name on it. then this past week in rehearsal she brought out a new song. It was "Brethren"! The lady who wrote me told me she stopped the rehearsal and told everyone that she knew me and that we were in Martin at the same time.

How fun is that?

We started "Brethren" at Hilldale this past Sunday too.

It was already in their library. They did great playing through it for their first time. It takes playing it for awhile to get comfortable with all of the key changes, the syncopations and the marts at interesting times. The music says it is a level 3, but I've always thought it was a level 4.

This site handbells.com brought to you by Gold Coast Music co. lists it as level 4. I think that is more acurate.

How Beautiful

Twyla Paris has written many beautiful songs. Her lyrics and her melodies are all so lovely. One of my favorites is How Beautiful. I have sung it many times for worship services and for weddings. My choirs have sung it.

A few years back I felt that it would make a lovely handbell piece, so I crafted an arrangement that I think captures the simple beauty of the piece.

Brethren on CD

I received a nice letter the other day from the "RiverBells" in Sacramento. They have just released their first CD. One of the selections is my arrangement of "Brethren, We Have Met to Worship". It has been recorded several times, but this is the first group to send me a copy of the CD. It was so thoughtful of them to do that. The selections on the CD are great. Stained-glass Crosses

This is the cross pattern I used to teach a stained-glass class at church this past summer. The class did a great job. I decided to make a few to sell at LifeWay's craft fair in October.

This cross is approx. 10 3/4 x 8 1/8

The red background cross is approx. 14 3/4 x 12. Red glass is made by putting gold in the glass while it is being made.

This cross is 10 3/4 x 8 1/4. My son-in-law likes for there to be "meaning" behind the things in art. I hate to say that there isn't some deep theological meaning behind the blue piece of glass in this piece. I just liked it.

Oh how fun is this? Since the point of this web site is to shamelessly promote my music then it may not surprise you that I've done a little research. I "googled" myself! It had been kind of fun to see the different web sites that have my name because they are selling some of my handbell or choral music. But I was really surprised to find two sites in Korean! One has my handbell arrangement of Imortal Invisible listed. You can even click on a link and see the first page of it. It's a Korean page again listing my choral piece I Will Giv eThanks to the Lord. Most of my handbell music has been published by Jeffers Handbell Supply. One of my favorite pieces is an arrangement of "Brethren, We Have Met to Worship". It is for 3-5 octaves. It has a lot of fun things about it: lots of synchopation, martelatos, swings, shakes... It has been a great seller. In fact, the year it was published it came out in August and it sold more copies than any other piece Jeffers published that year. As a result, I was named Jeffers' Composer of the Year for 1996. Music For Handbells

Handbells are one of my very favorite things. I've been writing for bells since 1982. My very first published piece was written while I was at a church that didn't even have bells. I missed them so much that I began writing for them.
That first piece was an arrangement of B. B. McKinney's great hymn "Glorious Is Thy Name". It was published in Handbells a publication of LifeWay Christian Resources. A friend of mine, R. G. Huff, framed that first song for me as a Christmas present. It is still hanging up in my home. That one published page of music was such a thrill for me that I started writing more and more.
